 Future prospects

  The Department aims to deepen current collaborations with the IT industry, and at the same time, seek to refine and expand into new ventures to further increase students’ exposure in related industries. The cornerstone of future developments at the Department is as follows:

1.     Information Society

The Department places great emphasis on the promotion of a society where information is everywhere and freely available. The establishment of an information society requires an interdisciplinary approach. Such a society not only includes internet hardware and software setups, information services, and software development, it also needs expertise in legal and ethical issues. The Department focuses on the research and development of advanced information environments, and provides intelligent systems that are able to infer, analyze, and learn. For example, building a network system that consists of programmable information that can be managed by the operator and users. Other research goals at the Department include adding dynamic functions to programmable internet systems that allow the network to be more flexible and diversified.

2.     3C Technology Integration

Computers, communications, and consumer electronics are collectively known as the 3Cs. The development of information and electronic integration is the future of information engineering. In this respect, the Department focuses on the research of embedded systems, integration of wireless internet service systems, as well as VLSI designs.

3.     Digital Learning

In order to improve teaching and learning efficiency, digital learning at the Department focuses on the integration of electronic content, communication, and computation in network systems. In response to the trend toward the integration of teaching and learning with technology, the Department aims to develop knowledge engineering, knowledge discovery, cognition and emotion computing, as well as other artificial intelligence-related technologies as part of our research on the Digital Learning System. At the same time, the Department strives to integrate learning assessment, cooperative learning, proactive learning, and adaptive learning with the goal of developing an e-book system, and promote wireless learning and other teaching aids.

4.     Bioinformatics

Biotechnology has become the most prominent industry in the 21st century. Biotechnology research now uses bioinformatics as a tool to analyze biological data through the combined use of mathematics, computation science, and biology. The Department aims to study and promote bioinformatics as a means to retrieve and collect information for further analysis by biologists.
